Delis Announces Retirement
      On May 1, 1972, George Delis started at Community Board 1. He recalled John Lindsay was mayor of New York City. For some perspective, the subway fare went up to 35 cents from 30 cents, the New York Police Department assigned female police officers to patrol for the first time and the Long Island Expressway opened its final section, out to Riverhead that year.

Vallone Vows Vote Against Congestion Pricing
      "I represent you, you have spoken here tonight, and I am going to oppose congestion pricing," Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. told Community Board 1. With those words, Vallone confirmed his vote against the plan to charge drivers of cars $8 ($21 for trucks) daily to enter Manhattan below 60th Street between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

      After years of its being a danger and a nuisance to the Astoria community, Amtrak was scheduled to start repairing the Hell Gate Bridge yesterday according to City Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. Vallone has constantly pestered Amtrak to plug the water leaks and put an end to the debris that flows from the bridge on to local streets.

No Easy Solution Seen For Dutch Kills Zoning Problems
Zoning as proposed by City Planning, reduces the floor-area ratio of many manufacturers in Dutch Kills from 5 FAR to 2 FAR, meaning that many of them are effectively prevented from expanding their businesses once the new zoning plan is final.
      Eric Palatnik, a land use lawyer who has several clients among the owners of light manufacturing companies in Dutch Kills, requested an appearance before the March meeting of the Dutch Kills Civic Association (DKCA) to deliver a fuller explanation of the remarks he made at the February meeting.

ICCFA Seeks Vet Burial Benefit Restoration
      Veterans' benefits once provided an allowance for vets to be buried in private and religious cemeteries if they decided to forego burial in a national cemetery. The total financial cost to the federal government for each veteran so interred was less than $700. In the early 1990s Congress ended this particular veterans' benefit.
