Young, Garment Association Donate Fabrics For Charity

Assemblymember Ellen Young (c.), holds a senior center doll and looks over donations of cloth with Sherman Eng, CGMAGNY Chairman (at Young's r., also holding a doll), Bland Senior Center Director Francy Zamora, (at Young's l.) and Bland Houses seniors and CGMAGNY board members.
Assemblymember Ellen Young last Thursday was joined by the Continental Garment Manufacturers Association of Greater New York and the Bland Houses Senior Center to announce a fabric drive benefiting the Bland Houses children's charity. The Association donated 800 yards of fabric and 100 pieces of women's clothing to the

Bland Houses Senior

Center to raise funds for the center and to supplement the center's charity, which works to create dolls and stuffed animals for children in Queens hospitals.

Interested participants willing to donate new cotton cloth can do so at the office of Assemblymember Ellen Young, 39- 07 Prince St., Suite 5D, Flushing, NY 11354. The center is also seeking volunteers to serve as sewing instructors to help refine the skills of the seniors. Applicants can fax a resume to 718-939- 1238.

The charity drive is part of Young's ongoing efforts to support and engage Flushing area senior citizens with the surrounding community. Clothing donated will be put up for auction to fund projects and programs at the Bland Houses Senior Center, which has experienced a significant funding shortage in recent years. Young allocated $3,000 to the Bland Houses from this year's budget for after-school programs.
