Thanks Giuliani [Rudolph Giuliani] capitalized on his fame as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. He successfully prosecuted and convicted drug dealers, organized crime figures, corrupt government officials and white collar criminals in his mayoral campaigns. He stressed anti-crime, pro-business, pro-education and quality of life issues. In a close election with racial overtones, Giuliani defeated incumbent Mayor [David] Dinkins. Making good on his campaign promise, Giuliani was re-elected by a large margin in 1998, winning four out of five of the city's boroughs. It was Mayor Giuliani's steady calm and effective leadership during the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 on the World Trade Center that prompted Time Magazine's choice [of him] as Man of the Year 2001. it also garnered him an honorary title from Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Fourteen states wanted him for mayor. Thank you, Rudolph W. Giuliani. Vince Lombardo Maspeth |
