Thompson: 'Boost NYC Anti-Terrorism Funds'

Alarmed at plans in Washington to cut anti-terror funding for New York City, city Comptroller William C. Thompson Jr. called on President George W. Bush to reverse course and restore those funds and increase financial support for area port and transit security.

"The ill-considered plans (to reduce funding) significantly imperil high-risk targets including New York City," said Thompson.

"There can be little doubt that New York City remains the nation's top terrorist target and that city residents must remain ever-vigilant against terrorist threats," Thompson said.

Crowley Pledges U.S. Aid For Bangladesh

Congressmember Joseph Crowley, co-chair of the Bangladesh Caucus in Congress, sponsored a resolution which pledges support for the people of Southern Bangladesh who are still suffering from effects of Cyclone Sidr which struck a month ago.

Crowley (D- Queens/The Bronx) said the House-passed resolution "reaffirmed our nation's commitment to helping the Bangladesh people recover" from the devastating cyclone, which left 4,500 dead, injured and homeless.

Immediately following the deadly November 15 cyclone, Crowley urged Bush to make available as much relief as possible, and last week's resolution restates that goal.

Blast Gang-Affiliated Apparel

Concerned with the proliferation of gang culture in New York City, with special attention to the use of paraphernalia to recruit and identify gang members, City Councilmembers Peter Vallone Jr., Public Safety Committee chair, and Leroy Comrie, Consumer Affairs Committee chair, held a joint hearing to expose the danger of encouraging these practices.

Aiming his criticism at two companies- New Era and Major League Baseball- neither of which sent representatives to the hearing, Vallone stated: "These companies are exploiting a culture of violence and death for their personal profit. Each hat they sell with a gang sign is an endorsement of the gang lifestyle, which plagues our communities with drugs and gunshots."

In a related matter, Comrie (D- Jamaica) called upon former football star Jim Brown, owner of a company which sells so-called "thug snacks", to change the brand name because it glorifies a gang lifestyle.- Compiled by John Toscano
