$13 M+ Awarded To Schools In Sabini's Senate District

State Senator John D. Sabini (D-I/Jackson Heights), a member of the senate Education Committee and supporter of the successful Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit that brought record levels of funding to New York City schools this year, is hailing another victory for area schools getting millions of dollars in state aid under the new "Contract for Excellence".

"New York City schools have historically been underfunded by the state, and we are finally reaping the benefits after years of fighting for more," Sabini said. "This infusion of cash into our more overcrowded and underperforming schools, as a direct result of action by the legislature, should go far towards reducing class sizes and improving our children's achievement."

Under the state Education Department Contract for Excellence, overcrowded and underperforming schools around the city are receiving an additional $257.8 million from New York state in order to address those problems directly. Queens schools are getting a total of $61.7 million, with almost half- $28.7 million- going to the schools in Districts 24 and 30 in Western Queens alone. Schools in Sabini's district and those serving his constituents in nearby districts are receiving $13.3 million.

In Sabini's district, the three biggest winners are I.S. 61, the Leonardo Da Vinci School, which is receiving $1.3 million; P.S. 143. the Louis Armstrong School, which is receiving $1.1 million, and P.S. 19, the Marino P. Jeantet School, which is receiving $1 million. All are in the neighborhood of Corona, home to many immigrants and where English proficiency and parent involvement are lower than in many other parts of Queens.

The money given to schools under the Contract for Excellence is allocated under any of four specific categories: Class Size Reduction, which may lead to the hiring of new teachers or the conversion or construction of new classroom space; Time on Task, which may be used either for extending classroom hours or hiring new teachers so that students get more instruction; Teacher and Principal Quality Initiatives, which is set aside for training and development, and Middle School/High School Restructuring, which is designed to change, add or eliminate academic programs.

A breakdown of Contract for Excellence funding in schools in Sabini's district follows. For detailed, school- and district-level reports on allocations throughout New York state, visit the state Education Department Web site at www.nysed.gov.
