Members of the Central Astoria Local Development Coalition and hundreds of area residents welcomed Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus as they made their first visit to the Astoria area this year on Friday, November 30.
Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus arrived at the intersection of Broadway and Steinway Street, where they greeted spectators and shoppers and posed for photos with local area children. Youngsters were given free books as a pre-holiday present, and were invited to join in the countdown to the traditional lighting of the holiday tree that sat atop of the Chase Bank located at the corner of Broadway and Steinway Streets.
Julie Wager, a well-respected, longtime community leader in Astoria and advertising director for the Queens Gazette, served as the master of ceremonies and did an excellent job of making the introductions for the event. Gazette Publisher Tony Barsamian was seen taking photos of the event that took place just a few blocks from the offices of the Queens Gazette.
