Deadline For State Trooper Application Is December 1

Major Michael A. Kopy of the New York State Police announced that more than 4,000 qualified applicants from New York City have signed up for the upcoming New York State Trooper exam. Interested applicants must apply before Dec. 1, 2007.

"The position of Trooper represents a tremendous opportunity to men and women who are interested in a law enforcement career," Major Michael A. Kopy, Troop NYC commander, said. "A career of a State Trooper is unlike any other profession, it offers a multifaceted career in the field of law enforcement. From patrol work to specialized services such as crime scene evidence technician, field training officer, K-9 handler, school resource officer, firearms instructor, scuba team, mobile response team, motor vehicle collision reconstruction, narcotics and specialized investigations units, there are several different positions within one lifelong career."

The campaign has been ongoing since June 1, 2007. The last exam given was in March 2004. The exam is given every three to four years. Interested candidates have less than two weeks left to apply.

The Web site offers a look into the New York State Police and gives viewers the ability to see the many different opportunities the New York State Police have to offer. The exam will be offered throughout New York state on January 19, January 26, February 2 and February 9, and will be offered at several convenient locations in New York City.

Currently, a trooper's starting salary is $50,374 during Academy training. The salary reaches $61,525 upon completion of 26 weeks of training at the Basic School, and after one year to $65,357, and $77,218 after five years, with additional increases during the first five years of service, and longevity increases beyond five years of service.

Requirements:

To Apply:

• Must be 20 years of age by Dec. 1, 2007 to apply to take the exam;

• Must not have reached 30th birthday prior to Dec. 1, 2007, the application deadline; however, the maximum age may be extended up to six years for active military service;

• Must have graduated from senior high school or possess a New York state high school equivalency diploma or military GED at the time of application;

• Must be a United States citizen at time of application;

• Must be of good moral character. A felony conviction is an automatic disqualification.

To Be Appointed:

• Must be at least 21 years of age.

• Must have 60 credit hours from an accredited college at time of appointment; Thirty credit hours may be waived for candidates with at least two full years active duty in the United States Military and an honorable discharge; or who have completed a certified Basic Police Officer Training Course approved by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council or its equivalent;

• Must be in excellent physical condition.

• Must be a New York state resident and possess a New York state driver's license at the time of appointment.

• Must successfully complete a medical examination, vision test, hearing test, background investigation including polygraph examination, and psychological evaluation to be appointed.

• Must comply with State Police Body Piercing/Body Art policy.
