Hails New Citizens
To The Editor:

It was with the greatest of interest that I read the informative and insightful articles that appeared in the Sept. 26, 2007 issue of the Gazette. Three articles pertained to positive themes and they are most appropriate for me to comment upon.

I applaud our new citizens of this country and am proud of them for passing the difficult citizenship examination. As a teacher of ESL and citizenship, I have prepared several senior citizen adults for this test and appreciate the drive, determination and hard work and study that these people put in to pass the exam and to become new American citizens. We must not take our citizenship for granted.

I applaud and appreciate [Congressmember] Carolyn Maloney for her caring about affordable housing for senior citizens and for all of the dedication and diligence she has done to provide a grant for the building of another senior citizen affordable housing building. Our senior citizens have been the greatest generation and done so much to make this nation great.

I also applaud Assemblymember [Michael] Gianaris for his idea of having a security camera at the Ditmars [Boulevard] subway station. This is a step in the right direction in protecting the safety and security of our Astoria residents. Cynthia Groopman Long Island City
