Why Speed Bumps? I would like to know why there are two speed bumps on 47th Street between 39th Avenue and Skillman Avenue. In fact, why are there any speed bumps on that block? It is 100 percent residential. There is no school, playground, or any building which would increase pedestrian traffic. There is no need for anyone even to cross that street. Why the speed bumps? If 47th Street has speed bumps, why not 46th Street, 45th Street, 44th Street, etc? All these streets are identical to 47th Street. Why the favoritism to this particular block? Meanwhile, 39th Drive, 52nd to 54th Streets, a wide street on Windmuller Park and playground, gets hundreds, even thousands of children daily, especially on weekends, with auto traffic in two directions, and many, many children crossing the street daily. The street is long enough and wide enough to witness an occasional drag race. Yet the Department of Transportation has twice seen fit to deny the request for a speed bump. The street, over 500 feet long, curves at one end, therefore does not qualify according to the bureaucratic requirements. Forget the hundreds of kids in Windmuller daily, but do somebody a favor on 47th Street. Al Volpe Woodside |
