Hails Eruv, Ed. Dept. Two positive events that occurred this week [September 19] which left me in a state of elation are worthy of sharing with the many Gazette readers. I applaud Councilmember [Eric] Gioia for his caring, dedication and devotion to his constituents of all ages, races, ethnic groups and religious faiths. It touched my heart greatly when I read in the Gazette that he was instrumental in the construction of an Eruv, which enables the Sunnyside Queens Orthodox Community to move freely in their area on the holy Sabbath Day. This makes me proud to be an American and to dwell in a land where all religious faiths are honored, respected and cherished and practiced freely. During this High Holy Day season for the Jewish people, the publication of this article in the Gazette was most appropriate. I also applaud and congratulate the New York City Board of Education for winning the highest achievement award for improvement in education and I applaud our mayor, Chancellor and teachers, parents, students and community education councils for making this possible. When everyone cooperates and works as a team, all bask in the sunshine glow of victorious achievement. Cynthia Groopman Long Island City |
