On Saturday, September 8, William Cullen Bryant H.S. faced South Bronx in their official home opener at Flushing Memorial Field, located on 149th Street in Whitestone. Parents, friends and relatives of the players on the two football squads braved the heat wave to sit in the hot stands and watch the game.
Both teams handled the football without scoring. Although South Bronx came close on its first possession, when Running Back No. 44 took off around the right end and scampered for 61 yards into the end zone untouched, the play was nullified when a holding penalty was called against a South Bronx offensive player.
Bryant opened the scoring in the second quarter by scoring on a 10-yard field goal by No. 10, Astoria resident Nick Dais, junior quarterback and place kicker. Bryant led 3-0.
South Bronx countered with a touchdown run by their No. 44. Their twopoint, extra point attempt was successful on a two-yard run by South Bronx No. 28. The score read South Bronx 8, Bryant 3.
Bryant did not quit and came back with a touchdown run by No. 21, Justin Polizzi, late in the second quarter. The extra point attempt was not successful. Bryant led 9-8.
With the heat unbearable on the field, the teams traded punts in the third quarter without any scoring.
Bryant finally broke the game open in the fourth quarter when No. 38, fullback Darro Clarke of East Elmhurst, tallied on a two-yard run, four minutes into the fourth quarter. The extra point was not successful. The Bryant defense held South Bronx scoreless in the second half, and secured the 15-8 victory. Clarke was the leading rusher with 68 yards and the Bryant quarterback led in passing with 4 for 9 for 69 yards. Bryant receivers who stood out were Felipe Cardoso (Astoria), with one reception for 32 yards, and Stephon Kelly (Jamaica) with two receptions for 36 yards.
Bryant head football coach Carl C. Brosnan has also had much success as the Bryant handball coach. Since 2001 his teams have a record of 63 wins and 12 losses with four undefeated seasons. Last year Brosnan's handball team went 11-1 and recorded three playoff wins as well. Brosnan has been coaching both handball and football at Bryant for 21 years and the football team went 6-3 last year under his tutelage.
