Reward Offered For Subway Flasher ID City police officials are seeking help from the public to identify and locate a man who leered at and then exposed himself to a 23-year-old woman traveling on the No. 7 train on August 26. Police said the young woman turned the tables on the pervert, snapping his photo on her cellphone camera. The woman was headed from Main Street in Flushing to Grand Central at about 6:20 p.m. when she noticed the man had exposed himself, said Transit Sergeant Steven Grabiec. The flasher, sitting in a seat opposite the woman on the nearly empty subway car, pulled the stunt as the train neared the Junction Boulevard station, Grabiec said. "He's not making any outward motion at all, doesn't look at her, doesn't say anything to her," said Grabiec. The woman noticed the man was partially hiding himself behind a newspaper as the train pulled into the station, Grabiec said. She remained calm, pulled out her cell phone and snapped the photo, then called 911. The woman told police the sicko "got nervous" when he spotted her on the phone. He hurriedly zipped his jeans and exited the train at the 82nd Street station in Jackson Heights, where he fled on foot in an unknown direction, the woman said. Transit cops who arrived at the station minutes later canvassed the area searching for the man, described as Hispanic, 5 feet, 4 inches tall and 170 pounds. He was wearing a Yankee shirt, blue jeans, white sneakers and dark sunglasses. Anyone with information is asked to call the Crimestoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. The Hotline is offering a $2,000 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly warned straphangers to use extreme caution when trying to catch subway flashers with cellphone cameras. Kelly warned straphangers to remember they may be putting themselves in danger by taking the photos. "The photos are a valuable tool for investigators searching for the flashers," Kelly said. "But think about what you are doing before you shoot the photo. Think about how the flasher might react when he realizes he's been caught with his pants down." - Liz Goff |
