Appeals For Fire Aid
Copies of the following letter, sent to the mayor and the governor, were received by the Gazette. Over the past week, I joined with many New Yorkers and Greek-Americans in expressing shock, horror and sadness at the news reports of fires ravaging our friends and allies in Greece. As you know, New York is home to hundreds of thousands of Greek-Americans who contribute invaluably to the ongoing success of our city. Indeed, the neighborhood of Astoria, which I represent, contains the largest population of people of Greek heritage outside of Greece itself. Unfortunately, New York has been no stranger to tragedy in recent years. In the wake of the unprecedented suffering New Yorkers experienced six years ago, Greece was among the countries to offer aid to our city. Accordingly, I request that we provide necessary support to Greece during this unprecedented crisis. Firefighting specialists and equipment as well as experts specifically trained in disaster management and post-disaster recovery are some of the ways we may be helpful. As a result of the devastating fires, dozens were killed and many more left homeless. New York must immediately step up and provide the type of support consistent with what is expected of a friend that was able to count on Greece's friendship in our time of need.
I would appreciate any help you could provide. I look forward to your favorable reply. |
