Recycle Electronics & Clothing In September Recycling is doing the right thing for the earth! Labor Day traditionally signals the end of summer and the imminent arrival of fall, the time of the year when we perform the usual change-of-season ritual of going through our closets to get ready for the colder months. Gone are the flip-flops, bathing suits and light cotton clothing, replaced by boots, coats and wool sweaters. But what do you do with the out-ofseason wardrobe? Discarding lightly worn clothing is clearly a waste. The most practical option is to donate it--recycle it, if you will. The same is true for last year's cell phone or unwanted computer. The Department of Sanitation is making it easy for you by sponsoring its "Fall 2007 Electronics Recycling and Clothing Donation Events" again, an easy way for you to dispose of unwanted items responsibly. Listed here is when and where you can donate lightly worn clothing, as well as recycle desktop/laptop computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards and mice, television sets, VCRs, DVD players and cell phones: •September 8, Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Staten Island Mall Parking Lot F 2655 Richmond Ave. •September 9, Sunday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Union Square 17th Street & Broadway Manhattan (Cars enter at 16th Street & Union Square) •September 16, Sunday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Lehman College Goulden Avenue, south of Bedford Park West, North Lot The Bronx •September 29, Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. St. John's University Alumni Hall Parking Lot Utopia Parkway & Union Turnpike Gate 3 on Union Turnpike & 80th Road Fresh Meadows •September 30, Sunday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. KeySpan Park Surf Avenue & 19th Street Coney Island Brooklyn Department of Sanitation donation events are made possible through the assistance of Goodwill Industries, clothing and linens; Lower East Side Ecology Center, Best Buy, Intel, Toshiba, electronics; Herbert Lehman College, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, St. John's University and Staten Island Mall/General Growth Properties, site partners. After donating your unwanted clothing and recycling your electronics, you'll feel good about yourself and you'll know you've done the right thing. (It might be the perfect time to go out and reward yourself with some new clothes or that brand new gizmo!) For more information, call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov/sanitation. |
