Onorato Announces Correction Officer Exam

State Senator George Onorato (D- Long Island City) announced that a civil service examination for those interested in becoming New York state correction officers will be held on October 27, with an exam filing deadline of September 10.

"I urge constituents with an interest in working in the New York state corrections system to investigate this opportunity, and to file an application to take the test," Onorato said, noting that the State Department of Correctional Services (NYSDOCS) is seeking both English- and Spanish-speaking candidates.

Correctional officers work throughout New York state in various facilities of the NYSDOCS, and are charged with overseeing the custody, security, safety and well-being of inmates. Those interested in becoming correction officers must be 21 years old on or before the date of their official appointment to the position. Correction officer candidates must also be high school graduates or hold high school equivalency diplomas and be United States citizens and New York State residents at the time of employment.

Applications to take the October 27, 2007 civil service exam must be postmarked no later than September 10, 2007, and must be accompanied by a $30 filing fee.

For more information and an application, interested constituents can contact Onorato's district office at 718-545-9706 and ask for extension 7907 in Albany, or e-mail Janet Kash of the senator's staff at kash@senate.state.ny.us. They can also visit the NYSDOCS Web site at www.docs.state.ny.us to download the appropriate application and learn more about the correction officer position. (Click on "Jobs Available" link.)
