YMCA To Hold 8th Tempone Dinner-Dance On Wednesday, October 17, the Long Island City YMCA will host its eighth annual Frank J. Tempone Service to Youth Dinner & Dance to raise funds for its youth programs and family services. The event, sponsored by State Bank of Long Island, Con Edison, and Astro Communications will be held at Terrace on the Park at 6 p.m. and will honor a longterm YMCA supporter, the Queensborough Rotary Club. Since its inception in 1920, the Queensborough Rotary Club has made the YMCA the focus of its commitment to community service, contributing over $90,000 during the last 87 years in support of the Y's programs and facilities. One hundred percent of the funds gathered from the Y's annual event go toward supporting the YMCA's free youth programs which serve more than 10,000 youngsters per year in the communities of Western Queens. Each year, the Long Island City YMCA selects individuals or organizations who have demonstrated a commitment to youth, characteristic of the late Frank J. Tempone, whose legacy is the basis for the LIC Y's annual celebration. Frank J. Tempone led the Long Island City YMCA as its executive director for 42 years and is responsible for building many of the youth programs that the YMCA provides today. A resident of Queensbridge, Long Island City, Astoria, Jackson Heights and Flushing, Tempone was also a member of several organizations including the Queens Chamber of Commerce and the Greater New York Sandlot Baseball Alliance. For more information about attending the Long Island City YMCA Dinner Dance event or for sponsorship information, contact Michael Keller, vice president of operations and executive director at 718-392-7932 ext. 228 or e-mail at mkeller@ymcanyc.org. The Long Island City YMCA is one of 19 branches of the YMCA of Greater New York. For 86 years, the LIC YMCA has worked to enrich the lives of families in Western Queens through programs that build the spirit, mind, and body. Presently, the LIC YMCA reaches over 13,000 adults and 10,000 young people through its numerous programs and services. The YMCA of Greater New York is a community service organization which promotes positive values through programs that build the spirit, mind, and body, welcoming all people with a focus on youth, since 1852. Supported in part through contributions to the Strong Kids Campaign, the YMCA provides membership assistance and scholarships to programs like summer camp, child care, and teen activities, so that no one is turned away due to an inability to pay.
