Mixed Emotions As I begin to share my opinions with the Gazette readers this week, I have mixed emotions. I am proud of our Gazette for 25 years of dedicated services and applaud all who continue to create a paper that is a delight to read, that opens our eyes and ears and minds. I am dismayed upon the feud that exists between our governor and senate leader and both should get their acts together, stop acting like little children and work for the common good of our state. In addition, the tug of war between our mayor and Albany about the $8 tax on vehicles in Manhattan is another example of how politics and pettiness can get in the way of improving our air, traffic and health of our city. Our city is not able to lose millions of dollars in federal funds due to the unwillingness of Albany to compromise and cooperate. We need a home rule act passed making NYC autonomous. I also agree with our lawmakers about the problems with Con Edison and the recent power outage that stranded people on trains and created havoc. Con Edison should get its act together. All they're interested in is price increases. I am, however, glad that a noise abatement bill has been enacted. We are all entitled to a noise free environment. However, the idea of making the fourth of July a three-day weekend and changing the holiday to a Monday appalls me. That takes the true significance out of the meaning of our nation's birthday. It seems to me that the interest now is on three days of weekend fun and the lack of history and commemoration.
Lastly, I am disappointed that there was no compromise in the enactment of the national immigration bill. Too much politics and antagonism stands in the way of bettering our society. This is not the American way. |
