Dive Into City Swim Programs
The city Department of Parks and Recreation Learn to Swim free instructional program offered by Parks and Recreation and the City Parks Foundation (CPF), with the support of the American Red Cross, is held at all of New York City's 33 public intermediate and Olympic outdoor pools. The program teaches tots age 1 to 5 and children age 6 to 14 basic water safety and swimming skills. Though the first of the Parks Department's three-week Learn to Swim sessions began July 6, to run through July 24, it's not too late to get in the swim. Two more three-week Learn to Swim sessions are offered. Call 311 to register for Session 2, July 26 through August 10, on July 25, between 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. and for Session 3, August 14 through 31 on August 13, between 9:15 and 10:30 a.m. For the 25th year, the annual outdoor adult lap swim program began on July 5 at 13 pools, giving adults the chance to take to the water for health and fitness at designated times without interruption from other swimmers. Designated times for adult lap swim sessions are Early Bird, 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and Night Owl, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Participants who swim 25 miles or more over the summer will receive a free tee shirt. For the eighth season, the Parks Department is holding outdoor swim-team training for the annual Five-Borough Championship swimming competition. Department personnel train swimmers, organize teams and run the Championship competition on Saturday, August 11 at Hamilton Fish Pool in Manhattan. Youths between the ages of 6 and 18 who can swim 25 yards in reasonably good form will be able to participate. Locations and training times vary depending on the borough and pool. All 52 Parks outdoor pools and city beaches are free and open to the public from Friday, June 29th, 2007 through Labor Day (Monday, September 3, 2007). General hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. All city beaches are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Call individual pools for more specific information.
Queens Outdoor Pools Astoria (Olympic size) 19th Street and 23rd Drive Astoria 718-626-8620 For the health, safety, and protection of everyone, guests are asked to observe the following rules: • Bathing suits must be worn on the decks and in the water. Men's bathing suits must have mesh linings. Hats may be worn on the deck for sun protection but are not allowed in the water. Plain white tee shirts may be worn over bathing suits if desired. Sneakers are not permitted. Rubber flip-flops or water shoes are permitted. • No urinating or defecating in the pools. • Children under 16 must be at least 8 inches taller than the maximum water depth to enter the pool without adult supervision. Specific height requirements are posted at every pool. • No person will be permitted in the pool having: skin lesions, sores or inflamed eyes, mouth, nose, or ear discharge, carrying communicable disease or having any type of bandage, adhesive tape, etc., on their body. • All bathers must take a shower in the locker room before entering the pool. • Patrons must provide their own padlock. No responsibility is assumed for lost articles. A standard master or combination lock is recommended. Small luggage locks are not permitted. • The use of swimming aids, water toys, and flotation devices is prohibited. • Electronic equipment, including radios, cameras, and cellular phones, is not allowed on pool decks. • Eating or drinking is permitted only in designated areas. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. • Beach chairs, baby strollers, bags, blankets or beach balls are not permitted on pool decks. The Parks Department will make its best effort to secure strollers. • Follow the directives of lifeguards, Parks staff and police. • Ball playing, running, jumping, using profane language and other forms of disruptive and disorderly behavior are prohibited. • No diving, except in designated areas. • No smoking, pets, or glass bottles permitted. • Books and bound periodicals are permitted on pool decks. Newspapers are not. Do's and Don'ts of Water Safety Do's • Do watch children and non-swimmers at all times. • Do swim when a lifeguard is on duty. • Do swim sober.
Don'ts • Don't swim if you don't know how. • Don't swim alone. • Don't swim when beaches are closed. |
