Eagerly Awaiting iPhones
On Friday, June 29 (l. to r.), John Mavromatis, Albin Hossain, Adnan Barik and Adib Hossain waited outside the AT&T store at 22-22 31st St., Astoria to be the first area residents to purchase Apple Computer's newest product, the iPhone. Mavromatis had camped at the store at midnight; Barik and the two Hossains joined him at 3 a.m. The devices were to go on sale in the United States at 6 p.m. Friday in each time zone and at some stores, prospective purchasers began their vigil on the preceding Monday, June 25. Unlike existing cellphones, the iPhone combines the functions of a cellphone, an iPod and a wireless Web browser and has a unique touch-screen display. The least expensive model costs $499 and users will pay at least $60 a month for service.
