Intern Feels At Home At Gazette

A couple of months ago, I walked into the Gazette office for the first time, ready for the first day of my internship. I had heard about the Gazette and read many of their newspapers and articles, but I didn't really know what to expect going in to work there. The only other work experience I had was as a hostess at my father's restaurant in Manhattan. I realized that working for a newspaper would be completely different from working at a restaurant, and therefore I was a little nervous, but also excited.

My sister, Eva Podaras, interned at the Gazette when she was also a junior in high school two years ago. Her internship there played a role in her acceptance to Yale University, which she currently attends, and where she is also on the newspaper staff. She advised me to intern as well, telling me that I'd enjoy it as much as she did and gain useful knowledge. I took her advice and thought to myself: this could really be a great experience that I would learn a lot from, just as she did.

I interned three times a week, approximately three hours each day. I would help around the office, carrying out tasks such as filing, picking up phones, etc. The staff was very personable and friendly to everyone they met, and this is something I admired and definitely picked up on. They welcomed me immediately and were very good with me throughout these past months.

Overall I have learned a lot, from working in an office to learning how to be professional and interact professionally with people. I will definitely carry this experience with me in the future, and I know that the skills I learned will be very useful to me. I was very lucky to have gone through this.
