2nd Mavromatis Golf Tournament Set For Sept. 10

The second annual Achilles Mavromatis Memorial Golf Classic will be held Monday, Sept. 10, 2007 at the Douglaston Golf Course, 63-20 Marathon Pkwy., Douglaston. All proceeds will benefit the Greek Children's Fund, a not-for-profit organization to benefit Greek, Cypriot and Greek- American children battling cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses. Mavromatis, a community and political activist and champion of Greek- and Cypriot-American causes, died May 3, 2005 at age 56 from pancreatic cancer.

Registration time: is 9 a.m. Registration will be followed by a buffet breakfast at 9:30 a.m. The tournament will begin with a Shotgun Start Tee-off at 10:30 a.m.

The individual golfer fee of $175 includes green fees and a golf cart with choice of two refreshments, full buffet breakfast, lunch with choice of beer or soda served at the turn and a barbecue dinner featuring hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken, ribs, steak, salad, beer and soda. Payment of the fee also includes automatic entry in the $1,000,000 shot contest and automatic entry in the $5,000 60-foot putt contest and player prizes, raffles and giveaways. Family and friends can attend the barbecue dinner, which starts at 4 pm., at a cost of $40 per person.

A terminal illness such as cancer affects the whole family, not just one member. The mission of the Greek Children's Fund (GCF) is to make every effort possible to provide assistance to financially distressed families.The GCF, affiliated with Schneider's Children's Hospital at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, has assisted families in need for the last 25 years. Sensitive to the needs of families coping with life-threatening illnesses, the GCF provides financial and emotional support to pediatric patients and their families.

Since its inception, the GCF has established strong ties with philanthropic institutions, private organizations and businesses in the tri-state area which provide the GCF with invaluable assistance and support. Volunteers work intensely in order to raise funds to provide these pediatric patients with the help they so desperately need.

The Greek Children's Fund provides for the following professional services to patients with life-threatening illnesses:

+ Financial assistance for the non-medical needs of pediatric patients and their families.

+ Assistance and funding of essential needs such as housing and daily living expenses.

+ Translation services during medical staff visits.

+ A part-time bilingual/bicultural Greek- American social worker and program coordinator at Schneider Children's Hospital.
