Airspace Redesign Is Harmful
To The Editor:

The alternative "Airspace Redesign" selected by the Federal Aviation Administration will reduce delays for the airlines, but will most definitely add to the suffering of community residents surrounding LaGuardia by seriously increasing noise, air and traffic pollution!

Astoria Heights and Jackson Heights are already overburdened and oversaturated by noxious jet fumes and heart-pounding noise from airport activities.

How dare this federal body decide to add to our environmental problems by indicating, in print, that "additional increases in decibel levels would be 'inconsequential' since communities (surrounding airports) are already exposed to extensive aviation noise!"

We are outraged by the FAA's uncaring, misguided and unconscionable alternative selection.

The United Community Civic Association, Assemblymember Michael Gianaris and Community Board No. 1 strongly oppose the FAA selection.

The FAA has abused its power. Trying to mitigate the projected additional noise impact after the damage has been done from this illconceived alternative is "smoke and mirrors", as the FAA well knows. Any and all additional flights will cause irreparable harm and sharply contribute to a decline in our communities' already fragile quality of life by increasing toxic emissions and noise.

We request that this federal body leave [airspace] as is, and do no additional harm!
