Borough-Wide Blotter 105th Precinct A brazen Brooklyn man is facing multiple charges after stealing a Nissan Murano from the driveway of a Queens cop on May 1 and slamming the SUV into a school bus filled with disabled children during his frantic bid to flee police. Cops of the 105th Precinct on patrol spotted the stolen SUV near Douglaston Parkway at about 2:30 p.m. and gave chase, police said. Eyewitnesses said the SUV was "flying" at about 70 mph when it tore into a small yellow school bus heading south on the Parkway. The bus was transporting disabled students from the private Lowell School at 203-05 32nd Ave., police said. The SUV rammed the bus, forcing it to clip a tree and take out a street sign before it flipped over, sending the kids inside tumbling, police said. Shocked onlookers rushed to help pull the bleeding and screaming kids from the bus. All of the children were conscious, bleeding from cuts on their heads, faces and arms, police said. Eight children were treated and released at Long Island Jewish Hospital. Police said the driver, Thomas Hernandez, 45, bailed from the SUV after it slammed into the bus, leaving the driver and the bleeding children to fend for themselves. |
