People All Over U.S. May Have Ground Zero Ills

"The 9/11 health crisis is an emergency on a national scale and it requires a federal response."
People from all 50 states and the District of Columbia have enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Registry, according to Congressmember Carolyn Maloney, who has been waging a persistent campaign to secure federal funds to treat New Yorkers who have become seriously ill after cleaning up at Ground Zero.

Maloney and Congressmember Vito Fossella (R- C, Staten Island) issued a report which found that thousands of Americans from throughout the country were in the immediate vicinity of Ground Zero in the months following 9/11.

People who signed up for the registry, Maloney said, will have their physical and mental conditions tracked over the next 20 years to record any changes.

Maloney (D- Queens/Manhattan), stated that visitors from every part of the country were either in Lower Manhattan on 9/11 or rushed to Ground Zero to help with rescue and recovery operations.

"The 9/11 health crisis is an emergency on a national scale and it requires a federal response," she declared. "The Bush Administration must take the lead in providing medical monitoring for every American exposed to Ground Zero toxins and treatment for anyone who's sick as a result."

Maloney said the report, issued last Wednesday, breaks down the number of WTC registrants by state and Congressional District, some of them from as far as California (1,035 registrants), Arizona (156) and Alabama (128).

She explained that the registry is a voluntary survey and no blood tests or medical examinations are required to enroll. Americans, she explained, must meet the following criteria to be eligible to be listed in the registry:

+Were in a building, on the street or on the subway south of Chambers Street on 9/11.

+Were involved in either rescue, recovery, cleanup or other activities at the World Trade Center site or World Trade Center recovery operations on Staten Island any time between Sept. 11, 2001 and June 30, 2002.- John Toscano
