MLHS Hosts Open House

Martin Luther H.S. will open its doors at 60-02 Maspeth Ave. in Maspeth to all current 6th, 7th and 8th grade students and their families on Tuesday, May 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. for its annual Spring Open House.

Teachers and administrators will be on hand to answer questions about academic, athletic and extracurricular programs, admission procedures, available modes of transportation, tuition and fees and available financial aid packages. Current students will also be present, offering tours of the facilities and a firsthand view of student life and activities at MLHS.

Parents can speak with members of the school's financial aid committee, to learn of scholarship opportunities available to incoming students. More than $90,000 in need-based grants is distributed annually among those families who have applied and qualified. About onethird of the current student body receives some form of financial aid.

Members of the faculty will be available to discuss the academic curriculum of the school, graduation requirements, Regents, Advanced Placement and Honors classes and college credit classes.

MLHS offers a full variety of interscholastic athletics, such as basketball (girls and boys), baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling. In past years, the Cougars and Lady Cougars have won Private School Athletic Association (PSAA) championship crowns in basketball, baseball, cross country track, soccer, and volleyball. The Athletic Department also organizes an intramural program in which the classes compete against each other. This program goes beyond athletic ability, as students have participated in events such as a food drive and Spirit Day.

Prospective students interested in writing, photography or graphic design can speak with students currently involved in the production of the Cougar Chronicle the student-run newspaper, The Invictus yearbook, and the annual literary magazine.

For those who enjoy performing, student members of the symphonic band, concert choir, chorus, drama club and performers from past musicals will discuss the wealth of opportunities for students to show off their talents. Students from other extracurricular activities such as the International, Spanish, French and Celtic Clubs will also be on hand to answer any questions.

Prospective students can also register for the upcoming entrance exam, scheduled for Saturday, May 19 at 8:30 a.m. at MLHS.

Martin Luther H.S., accredited by the Middle States Association and Registered by the New York State Board of Regents, offers students a college preparatory curriculum within a caring Christian community. Advanced placement courses and college credit classes through St. John's University and Adelphi University are available, as are extracurricular activities ranging from band and choir to varsity and junior varsity sports.
