Mets Fan Should 'Step Up To The Plate' Ellen Massey, the Manhattan lawyer who was injured when an allegedly drunken Met fan fell on her during the April 9 Mets opening game, is demanding that team officials put a cap on beer consumption in the stands. Massey was at Shea Stadium with her two nephews when she and her nephews were doused with beer. "All of a sudden I felt a huge thud on my back and my head," Massey said. "It was like a ton of something slammed into me." Mike Sabella, a Mets fan said, "The guy came out of nowhere. He dropped like a bag of bricks right onto the lady's back, she never knew what hit her, and the guy didn't even stick around to see if she was okay. He was gone, just like that, into the crowd." Two off-duty paramedics seated below Massey attended to her injury until a team of Shea emergency medical technicians arrived. Family members said they hoped the incident will encourage Mets officials to take a tougher stance on fans who drink too much at home games and they hoped team officials will try harder to spot drunken fans and boot them from the stands before they hurt someone. Massey's family said she has hired an attorney. Mets spokesperson Jay Horowitz declined to comment on any plans Shea officials might have to supplement. He commented that team officials are working on obtaining the identity of the fan who fell on Massey. - Liz Goff |
