On the brief side...
Young Women's School Now In Astoria

A new all-girls school, the Young Woman's Leadership Foundation, which opened a new branch in Astoria this year, recently moved into its permanent home at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church on Newtown Avenue. The school currently consists of just one class of about 80 sixth-graders and has started conducting classes in the first floor of the church. Previously the school had been temporarily located in P.S. 85, the Judge Charles Vallone School when it opened last fall.

City Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. (D- Astoria), who worked with the community to bring the school into his district, at the grand opening of the new facility congratulated the students and staff on their commitment to success.

"I'm looking out tonight at the future leaders of our city and country," he stated. "The next councilmember of this district might even be in the audience. Just don't run against me."

Former Council Speaker Peter Vallone Sr. discovered the school 10 years ago when he visited it in Harlem. He was struck with the way teachers worked with students. From that time forward the Vallone family supported the school and its mission of giving young women the opportunity to use education as a key to social and economic advances.

The organization now has three schools in New York City and nine across the country. Maloney Pleased With FDA Action

The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reversed course and will fund the Office of Women's Health (OWH) Congressmember Carolyn Maloney reports. The lawmaker said that, previously, the FDA had been going to cut the OWH budget this year by more than $1.2 million.

Last month, Maloney (D- Queens/Manhattan) reintroduced legislation to make permanent the Offices of Women's Health at the FDA and four other federal agencies. The offices ensure that FDA programs and other agencies are gender sensitive and work to address sex-based disparities in the safety and efficacy of medical products approved by the FDA. The latter agency also monitors progress of women's health initiatives and partners with other agencies to promote women's health programs. Weiner Holds Art Competition

Congressmember Anthony Weiner (D- Queens/Brooklyn) has invited students from grades 9 through 12 in his district to participate in a Congressional Art competition, which annually celebrates the achievements of young artists throughout the nation.

Each high school can submit three entries to a district-wide competition. Congressmembers collect the artwork and choose one piece from each district to be displayed in the Capitol Building. The winning artist is also invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the nation's capital.
