Help The Homeless
To The Editor:

As I picked up one of our regional newspapers I was disturbed to see on the front page a homeless man and titled, "Million Dollar Bum". Now I was appalled that this man is being sued by Karl Kemp who owns an antique shop on Madison Avenue and has filed a milliondollar lawsuit demanding the vagrant leave from the sidewalk in front of his shop. Now his complaint is that this homeless man and three others are hurting his business. Well as I look at it, business should also be concerned with the have nots and show compassion, for is that not why God put us on this good earth?

Added to that, this lawsuit is just mean spirited. I truly feel for this homeless man and all like him for I was homeless myself back in the 1970s for a time. I remember the cold, bleeding sores on my body from not bathing and pan handling for food. I still remember the pain. Furthermore, I think a portion of the $1 billion surplus Mayor Bloomberg announced the other day should go to help the homeless, who I believe are the most in need and can't help themselves. All those who believe as I do should write to Mayor Bloomberg and ask him to show pity on such as these. Also if anyone would like to help, you can volunteer with an organization that serves homeless New Yorkers, start a volunteer-run shelter in your house of worship or become active in efforts to promote lowincome housing or other anti-poverty initiatives. Visit www.partnershipforthehomeless. org. where you can find out about volunteer opportunities and ways to take action. Finally, let me add the fact that the Department of Homeless Services operates single adult and family shelters, the largest segment of the shelter system. Other shelters are offered for victims of domestic violence, youth shelters and those living with HIV/AIDS. Let's all lend a hand and help our fellow human beings. Sincerely Yours,
Frederick R. Bedell Jr.
