On the brief side...
Coat Distribution Welcomed
An assortment of winter coats collected through the effort of Assemblymember Jose Peralta (D- Corona) will be distributed tomorrow at the Corona- Elmhurst Center for Economic Development, 39-13 104th St., Corona at noon.
Peralta, who will be joined by HEALTH PLUS Health Insurance, said, "The coat distribution will aid families who cannot afford the high cost of coats. Lack of warm clothing is a perennial problem that affects those most vulnerable in our community. In the past few years there have been several deaths due to hypothermia and lack of access to warm clothing."
Peralta said he has made it a priority to ensure that families are properly clothed so as to withstand falling temperatures. Padavan Urges C.C. End Home Heating Fuel Tax
Earlier this year the state legislature passed and then Governor George Pataki signed into law a measure which allows the City Council to eliminate the sales tax on home heating fuels.
However, the council has failed to take action, state Senator Frank Padavan complained. But there is still time for the council to act, he said, and New York City residents should urge them to end the tax. Community Group Opens New Computer Lab
The Chian Federation, a non-profit Greek American community based in Astoria, recently opened a new computer lab which will be used to tutor children and adults in math, English and Greek.
City Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. (D- Astoria), who secured the funds to purchase the computer lab, stated at the opening: "In our world today, learning to work with computers is as important as learning to read. This computer lab will help children in our neighborhoods receive a valuable education while gaining familiarity with new technology at the same time."
The lab at Chian Federation headquarters at 44-01 Broadway, Astoria, consists of 10 Dell PCs, complete with educational softwear, and a high-speed Internet connection. Vallone secured a city council grant for $23,000 to obtain the equipment and to renovate the space. Civil Liberties Board Bill O.K.'d
A bill implementing the 9/11 Commission's recommendations passed by Congress also included the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board bill introduced by Congressmember Carolyn Maloney (D- Queens/Manhattan).
Maloney stated, "The American people must have trust in their government to support its tactics against terrorism. The Civil Liberties Board is vital to upholding public trust in the government, and giving it teeth is the best way to make sure it does its job. I applaud [House Speaker Nancy Pelosi] for including these provisions in the First 100 Hours agenda."
The Maloney legislation gives the board independence by removing it from White House control and the power to subpoena potential witnesses. Under its terms, all board appointees require Senate confirmation and there must be a close bipartisan balance on the board. Mayersohn Sets Family Health Fair
