Disco Band To Perform At St. Francis Prep Dance

The cafeteria at St. Francis Prep will be the scene of a return to the glorious years of disco Saturday night, February 10 when the Grammy Award-winning disco group the Trammps appears in person at the St. Francis Prep Fathers' Guild annual Oldies Dance. Besides The Trammps, DJ Johnny Dee will keep the music coming from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Cold hero sandwiches, salads, snacks, dessert and coffee will be provided and a cash bar will be open. All profits will be used to benefit students at the school.

Based in Philadelphia, The Trammps was one of the first disco bands. Their 1976 single, "Disco Inferno", became part of the "Saturday Night Fever" sound track in 1977 and reached Number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in May 1978. "Disco Inferno" was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in New York City on Sept. 19, 2005. Other Trammps hits include "Hold Back the Night" (1975) and "That's Where the Happy People Go" (1975). In 1977, the group released "The Night the Lights Went Out", describing in song the electrical blackout that affected New York City on July 13, 1977.

St. Francis Preparatory School, the largest private Catholic secondary school in the United States, is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The school is registered with the Board of Regents of the State of New York and is a member of the New York State Association of Independent Schools. The school received an "Excellence in Private Education" award from the U. S. Department of Education in 1983 and was recognized by U.S. News and World Report® as an Outstanding American High School in 1999. Ninety-eight percent of graduating seniors go on to college.

St. Francis Prep began life as St. Francis Academy, the first private Catholic school on Long Island, in the fall of 1858 at 300 Baltic St., Brooklyn with two Franciscan Brothers from Ireland as its faculty. The school officially became St. Francis Preparatory School in 1935 and moved to its present location in 1974. Women were first admitted in 1974 as well. The school has more than 25,000 alumni.

The St. Francis Prep Fathers' Guild was founded in 1957 as a fundraising and support organization for the school. During the past several years, the guild has raised money that has been used to hold down the cost of tuition and to further many of the programs and activities offered at St. Francis Prep.
