A meal at Kati Allo is always a pleasure, where fabulous Greek cuisine is prepared fresh each day. In addition, the service is friendly and the ambience is peaceful and pleasant, punctuated by stucco walls, Greek paintings and artwork. The facade is quaint too, with pretty lampposts in front, just off Francis Lewis Blvd and 29th Avenue. Pretty wicker furniture suggests summer even on the coldest winter night. The name means "something else" and you'll be delighted when you see the variety of reasonably priced menu offerings, available to dine in or to go.

Since owners Manny and Christina Zavolas opened Kati Allo six years ago, they have insisted on the best quality ingredients, prepared with family recipes to please their ever-growing clientele. Besides the busy dining room, take out orders fly from the counter of the exposed kitchen. You will enjoy Greek style fish, pork, lamb, salads and vegetables all at their peak of flavor and freshness. Start with one of the tempting appetizers which include a number of tasty salads. A trio of traditional spreads includes homemade eggplant salad (melitzanosalata), whose smoky flavor was fresh and light in the absence of mayonnaise, delicate caviar spread taramosalata), and scordalia, a puree of potato and garlic. All are excellent, spread on triangles of warm pita bread. Hot appetizers, such as grilled octopus, is cooked till tender and delicious, with just the right amount of vinegar and olive oil. Saganaki is a hunk of fried kefalograviera cheese, finished with a touch of flaming brandy, a feast for the palate. Loukaniko are savory Greek sausage, grilled and served with wedges of lemon. A glass of wine or beer will enhance these dishes and the housemade, flaky spinach pie, cheese pie or stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) also make great starters to share. Try a bowl of avgolemono soup, a hearty combination of chicken soup with egg drops and lemon.

Kati Allo's fish and seafood dishes are fresh and delicious, prepared simply with lemon, olive oil and herbs. Try the whole fish of the day, which might be porgie, red snapper or striped bass. Stuffed salmon is a healthy item, filled with spinach and feta cheese for a very hearty dish, served with vegetable, rice or potatoes. Tender calamari are stuffed with feta, herbs and tomato then grilled on the charcoal fire to meld all these wonderful flavors together. Shrimp kebabs are a popular item, as is the Kati Allo Seafood Special. This generously sized entrée offers sautéed jumbo shrimp, scallops and fillet of sole over a mound of pasta ($18.95).

Kati Allo serves tender, savory meats, marinated and prepared on the spot, to be served piping hot and juicy. Shish kebabs are tender chunks of marinated lamb skewered with peppers, tomatoes and onions. At just $10.95, this is a great meal, especially when you consider that it comes with a crunchy salad, lemon potatoes or rice and warm pita. The "doner" plate contains marinated pork, thinly sliced from a rotisserie, that melts in your mouth. Traditional gyro and souvlaki meats can be ordered as an entrée with all the accompaniments, or stuffed into fresh pita bread sandwich for about $4.75.

Check the menu for Christina's wonderful specials of the evening. Be it lamb stew, stuffed eggplant or orzo pasta with fresh spinach, there's always something new and different to try at every visit to Kati Allo. In warm weather, a tranquil, outdoor garden provides a very pleasant setting for a Mediterranean meal under an umbrella's shade.
