Sabini Starts Comprehensive Health Outreach Program
As part of his ongoing effort to bring health screenings and education to the diverse communities in his Queens district, State Senator John D. Sabini (D/I-Elmhurst) inaugurated a comprehensive Health Outreach Program last Thursday, November 1, that begins with a series of free flu shots in partnership with Privilege Care, a private health clinic with a strong focus on community engagement.
The event also allowed Sabini to unveil his new Community Outreach Mobile Unit, a roving office with multilingual staff that will bring this and other initiatives to residents of Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Corona, East Elmhurst and Woodside in their own neighborhoods.
"In Queens neighborhoods like the ones I represent, higher-than-average indices of ailments combined with language and financial barriers keep many people from getting access to the healthcare services they need to stay healthy" Sabini said. "My Health Outreach Program and Mobile Unit will help address this problem by bringing free screenings and educational events to residents where they live and in the languages they speak."
The Sabini Health Outreach Program will begin with a series of free flu shot drives this month at four senior centers in Corona, Lefrak City and Jackson Heights, as well as a week of free flu shots at Privilege Care's Elmhurst clinic. It will continue in the following three months with a series of health screenings at busy commercial intersections in Senate District 13, cosponsored by Elmhurst Hospital Center. The program will continue in Spring 2008 with more screenings and educational events yet to be scheduled; a full current schedule follows.
Privilege Care Practice Administrator Josh Farkovits said, "Privilege Care is proud to partner with Senator Sabini in bringing health services to the people of Western Queens. It's part of our mission to actively engage with the community we operate in, and giving free flu shots at the beginning of flu season is a perfect way to do that."
