Al Oerter, 71, Four-Time Olympics Discus Champion
      Olympics Discus Gold Medalist Al Oerter died October 1 at age 71. He won gold medals in four successive Olympics and set a record in the discus event each time. Oerter was born Aug. 18, 1936 in Astoria and grew up in New Hyde Park, Long Island, where he attended Sewanhaka H.S.

Queens Flag Football Teams Make Championships
      Youngsters from the Queens-based DAC NFLFlag Fooball league are once again going to represent the New York region at the NFLTournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida in the middle of November. The DAC Panthers 12-14 and 9-11 teams both qualified for the national event after winning the New York Jets regional, held at Hofstra University on September 30.

      Info Tech wearing white uniforms with silver helmets and a 3-1 record, visited Springfield Gardens, wearing their home green and gold (1-3) on Sunday, October 7. The Long Island City based Info Tech H.S., riding near the top of the bowl division, was optimistic facing a team with a losing record.

Legendary Rizzuto Tapped For A Park Of His Own
      Plans are underway to rename Smokey Oval Park in Richmond Hill after legendary Yankee shortstop and announcer, Phil Rizzuto. Community Board 9 members voted unanimously in September to approve the proposal, which is now in the hands of the city Parks Department.
