In the previous two years, Coach Jose Cosme's South Bronx Phoenix team has had records of 3-6 and 3-7. This year, South Bronx has begun the New York City public schools PSAL season with an 0-3 record. Injuries have hindered the team, leaving many backup players in starting positions.
John Adams head coach Gerald Weitzen has led his Spartans to 1-8 and 0-9 records in the last two seasons. But this year, the Spartans are at the top of the PSAL Cup Division, with an impressive 3-0 record prior to this game.
Adams quarterback Louis Cerna was 6-7, hitting five different receivers for a total of 107 yards and two touchdowns. His favorite receivers in this game were Akeem Chavis, one catch for 43 yards, Christopher Berrios, one catch for a 25- yard touchdown, Troyseter Joseph, 1 catch for a 25-yard touchdown, Kevin Patterson, two catches for eight yards and multipurpose back Darren Baker, one catch for nine yards.
Adams dominated the game on the ground as well. The Spartans were led by Darren Baker, who led all running backs with 108 yards on nine rushes and two touchdowns. Kevin Patterson chalked up 51 yards on five carries. Quarterback Luis Cerna added 14 yards with one touchdown on three carries.
The lone score for South Bronx came just before the 4-minute warning of the game on a touchdown pass from substitute quarterback Manuel Daniel to No. 6, Sylvestre Maldonado. Daniel threw for 23 yards on one completion in four attempts for the game, including one John Adams interception. His only pass went for 23 yards for a touchdown as the game came to a close.
On the defensive side of the line of scrimmage, Ariel Medrano for Adams led all defenders with 10 tackles and two sacks, while Kevin Patterson had nine tackles and one sack and Christopher Mc- Claren and Darren Baker had eight tackles each. Elizear Torres led South Bronx with eight tackles.
The Adams coaching staff has some family history. Assistant Coach Larry Jones played at Adams in 1997. He was coached by Assistant Coach Joe Emma, who played football for Adams in 1978. Emma was a student of Adams head coach, Gerald Weitzen, who is a 30-yearplus veteran of the New York City public schools.
In addition to the football team doing well this year, Adams touts an undefeated 3-0 record for the school's varsity soccer team as well.
