N ew York restaurants come and go like so many subway cars, but the landmark TBone Diner, has been serving its faithful clientele since 1934. Conveniently located on Queens Blvd., next block
to the Midway movie theatre,
the T-Bone Diner has been frequented by many celebrities, politicians and thousands of Queens residents over the years. They all come for the big portions of home style food and desserts, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Peter Plevrites took ownership of this famous diner 25 years ago, but it is his brother George who is nearly always on site, greeting customers by name and suggesting something delicious for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Breakfast at the T-Bone, which is served all day, can be anything from two eggs over easy to a stack of flap jacks with syrup. French toast is made with white bread or thick cut challah and Belgian waffles with your favorite topping make a great nighttime snack after a movie at the Midway. They'll make great egg sandwiches to take away with you, as the subway is right outside. The coffee is great and the service is fast and friendly.
Enjoy great lunch specials served up in a flash so you can get on your way. Choose from roast beef, a classic turkey club with bacon or corned beef sandwiches, a variety of healthy wrap sandwiches like the Mediterranean, stuffed with feta cheese, tomato and lettuce and triple decker sandwiches. For the health conscious, the T-Bone Diner is happy to feature low-fat buffalo burgers and turkey burgers as well as fresh, crunchy salads.
After work, before a movie, or any evening, you'll find dinner specials at the T-Bone that can't be beat. The Complete Dinner Special, served Monday through Friday, costs between $10 and $12 and includes a cup of their house made soup, such as lentil or chicken noodle, or salad, entrée, and a complimentary glass of wine. Even a family on a budget could afford to eat out at these prices. To accommodate a steady clientele, each night features a different array of entrées to choose from. You've got to try the old- fashioned, baked meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. Tuesday's lamb stew is real comfort food and Wednesday's stuffed cabbage is made from a recipe that dates back to 1952. Saturdays and Sundays feature roast leg of lamb or roast loin of pork. At these prices, it doesn't pay to cook at home. All the baking is done on the premises, including the warm bread and buttermilk biscuits that come with your meal.
The signature T-bone steak dinner is still one of the most requested dishes. Served with crunchy onion rings and mushroom caps, it packs a lot of sizzle for just $19.95. You can also order juicy center cut pork chops or Roumanian steak, which is tender skirt steak, cooked to perfection.
The T-Bone Diner proudly serves fresh fish and seafood and will fry it, stuff it or broil it, as you desire. The broiled fisherman's platter includes flaky fillet of sole, scallops, shrimp and baked clams for just $19.95, including soup or salad. Fillet of red snapper or salmon is also on the low cholesterol menu, and is served on a bed of spinach. If you're living on the edge, try the plump fried scallops on toast with tartar sauce.
The talented chef is always creating new dishes in response to customer requests. Pasta dishes such as spinach fettuccine topped with grilled chicken, garlic and a touch of oil appeal to the health-conscious, as does fresh roasted turkey on a bed of steamed spinach or broccoli.
A sparkling glass case displays dazzling desserts, all of which are made on the premises. Chocolate cheesecake, traditional N.Y. style cheesecake, carrot cake and lemon meringue pie are just a few of the temptations you'll be faced with. Creamy rice pudding, chocolate pudding and jello are always popular with the kids, as are sundaes and ice cream floats.
Visit the landmark T-Bone Diner for breakfast, lunch, dinner or anytime snack, as the diner is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There's always something good cooking and the staff is friendly and efficient.
