108th Pct. Auxiliary Officers Are March Cops Of The Month
      The April meeting of the 108th Police Precinct Community Council featured another tribute to Auxiliary Police Officers Greg Baranowski and Thomas Massa, as Precinct Commander Captain Thomas Kavanagh named them Cops of the Month. The commander then did a crime report and took questions, as did Sergeant Tom Larson, who handled a traffic inquiry.

Burglaries, Larcenies Up Slightly In 114th Pct.
      Crime in the 114th Precinct continues to stay down. Complaints in the seven major crime categories (murder, rape, robbery, felonious assault, burglary, grand larceny and grand larceny auto) are down 6.6 percent through April 22, this year, compared to the same period last year. Burglaries are down almost 11 percent so far this year.

Local Groups Oppose FAA Plans For Local Airports
      While Mayor Michael Bloomberg grapples with how best to alleviate traffic congestion on the ground in New York City, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is trying to come up with a new solution for the same problems in the sky. After some study, the FAA announced last month it has a preferred plan, called the Integrated Airspace Alternative.

      More than 200 St. John's Prep alumni returned to the preparatory high school on Crescent Street, Astoria for a reunion of classmates, teachers and administrators on March 24. The classes of 1982, 1987, 1992, and 1997 were specifically honored, but members of other classes attended as well.

TMLA Junior Is Nobel Essay Contestant
      Christina Cama, a junior at The Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates, has been selected as a finalist in the Nobel Essay Contest sponsored by the Nobel Prize Foundation in conjunction with the New York Academy of Sciences and the Consulate General of Sweden. Cama competed with students from every high school in the five boroughs of New York City.

      The nor'easter that lashed New York City and forced the postponement of the Greek Independence Day Parade, from April 15 to April 22 did not interfere with the events held by Greek-American societies heralding the original Greek Independence Day in 1821. Commerce Bank Branch Mural Showcases History
      Customers and visitors who walk into the Commerce Bank branch at Union Turnpike and 164th Street in Hillcrest will be greeted by a large, colorful wall mural that will reveal a bit of the area's history. The mural at the Hillcrest branch is based on a photograph taken in 1932 and shows the view down Union Turnpike looking east towards 164th Street.
