A Rose For Geraldine
Jackson & Perkins Company announced the debut of a commemorative hybrid tea rose in honor of Geraldine A. Ferraro, former Congressmember of the United States, United Nations ambassador, and the first and only woman to be nominated for Vice President by a major party. In tribute to Geraldine A. Ferraro's inspirational courage and grace, both as a public figure and as a survivor of multiple myeloma, Fordham Law School will host a ceremony to introduce the commemorative cause rose.
Jackson & Perkins Company President Bill Williams said, "We are pleased to offer this exclusive rose in honor of Ms. Ferraro, who has dedicated her life to the service of the American people. We applaud her commitment to global human rights issues."
Ferraro, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1998, said, "On behalf of the millions of victims, survivors, and families affected by multiple myeloma, I am both honored and humbled to have this beautiful Jackson & Perkins rose named after me. This rose, which will benefit the life-saving work of the MMRF [Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation], is both a celebration of the progress we have made so far in combating this disease, and is also a stark reminder of how far we still have to go in terms of research and treatment."
The light pink hybrid tea rose with pointed buds that spiral open into soft pink, densely petaled flowers and a wonderful anise aroma was personally selected by Ferraro. Ten percent of the net proceeds from the sale of each rose will be donated to the MMRF to help fulfill their mission to eradicate this deadly cancer.
Jackson & Perkins' nationally renowned rose hybridizer, Dr. Keith Zary, worked closely with Ferraro to design this rose. The rose will be available exclusively in the Jackson & Perkins catalog starting in January 2007 or at www.jacksonandperkins. com.
The Geraldine A. Ferraro Rose joins a significant list of cause roses that honor prominent leaders and organizations with proceeds being donated to designated charities.
