2007 Young Artists Violin Competition Jan. 5 The Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts is holding their 2007 Young Artists Violin Competition. The contest is being sponsored by Flushing Violin Shop and is open to all violin students, ages 5 to 18 who live, go to school or receive music instruction in Queens county. A completed application form, and a recording in cassette or CD format of the student playing the violin should be submitted to Flushing Town Hall by Jan. 5, 2007. Only qualified contestants will be notified by phone by Jan. 19, 2007, with a specific time slot for the contest. Registration is $25 (sorry, no refunds) and can be downloaded at www.flushingtownhall.org. Contestants should be prepared to play from the competition repertoire listed below, judges reserve the right to listen to only a portion of any selection. The top three winners in each age division will be awarded a brand new Snow Violin, and have the opportunity to perform at Flushing Town Hall in a special Winners Recital on May 12, 2007. Division I: Ages 5 to 9: Prepare any two pieces of music (total of 10 minutes), with piano accompaniment. Contrasting styles preferred. Division II: Ages 10 to 13: Prepare a short show piece with piano accompaniment; plus, one movement of a classical or Romantic concerto. Division III: Ages 14 to 18: Prepare one of the following solo violin works by J. S. Bach: Adagio and Fugue in G minor, Grave and Fugue in A minor, Adagio and Fugue in C major; plus, one movement of a major Romantic concerto (cadenza included) with piano accompaniment. |
