School, has been chosen to participate in next year's Students on Ice program, which sends younga people on a guided two-week journey to Antarctica. Lelekidis' trip, and those of four other New York City students (one from each borough), has been paid for entirely through a grant from New York philanthropist Harold Snyder.

Students on Ice and Congressmember Carolyn B. Maloney (D-Queens, Manhattan) honored Lelekidis and her fellow travelers at a ceremony at the Explorers Club recently. Snyder asked Maloney to identify an outstanding student from Queens to receive a scholarship to the Students on Ice program.

"Anthoula is a very talented young woman and I'm delighted that she'll have this extraordinary opportunity," said Maloney. "Students on Ice helps young people understand the beauty and fragility of the natural world, and how important it is to conserve places like Antarctica for generations to come."

"I'd also like to thank Harold Snyder for his extraordinary generosity and vision," Maloney added. "Harold made a lifechanging trip to Antarctica and decided to share his experience in the most tangible way possible - by enabling one young person from every borough to travel there, too."
