restoring normal quality of

life for women who have been diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer with a benefit and fundraising silent auction at Riccardo's by the Bridge, Astoria on November 15. Carrying on a longstanding tradition, Joseph Pistilli, president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of First Central Savings Bank, was master of ceremonies for the benefit and auction, which started at 7 p.m.

Since 1996 SHAREing & CAREing has honored members of the community and medical personnel who have aided in the fight against breast cancer. This year, the guests of honor were John Maltz, president of Greiner- Maltz, and Anthony Argento, president, Broadway Stages. Deirdre Henehan, M.D., and William Schwartz, M.D. received the SHAREing & CAREing Physicians Recognition Award and Andrew Latos of Latos Latos & Di Pippo received the organization's Community Recognition Award.

(L. to r.): John Maltz, Anna Kril, Eartha Washington, Linda Perno, Peter Vallone Sr.; (at microphone): state Senator George Onorato.
John Maltz, president of Greiner-Maltz Company of New York, became a licensed real estate broker in 1981 and a licensed New York State real estate appraiser in 1998. A graduate of the New York University real estate diploma program, he has authored more than 20 published real estate articles. His accomplishments include creating the sale of the EDO Corporation headquarters complex, representing Motorola in their long-term sublease to Sears, forcing the relocation of a Barnes & Noble store to make room for a Chase-JPMorgan bank branch, representing the government of the Republic of Korea in its sale of the facility that is now home to Silvercup Studios, procuring and negotiating the long-term lease of a 160,000-square-foot office and distribution center for the New York Times, negotiating a long-term lease for Harley-Davidson, reconfiguring a auto dealership site to allow for the sale of one acre at a price of more than $100 per square foot and appraising 25 Barclay's Bank branches for their acquisition.

(L. to r.): John Maltz, Anthony Argento, Anna Kril, Eartha Washington.; (at microphone): City Councilmember Eric Gioia.
Sicilian-born Anthony Argento arrived in the United States at age eight, attended Long Island City H.S. and Queens College and became a teacher, then a real estate investor, buying and refurbishing dilapidated properties. His efforts aided in rehabilitating and improving Corona and Long Island City in Queens and Greenpoint and Williamsburg in Brooklyn. He then turned a lifelong fascination with the business of filmmaking into the highly successful Broadway Stages and Film Studio. Today, Broadway Stages has 10 studios in Long Island City and Brooklyn where Madonna, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Lopez, Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt and Al Pacino have worked. He brought lighting to Ground Zero only a few hours after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks; that act and his other generous contributions to rescue efforts earned him commendations from Governor George Pataki. He has also received numerous awards from the YMCA and the New York City Police Department.

Queens born and raised, Deirdre Henehan, M.D. attended St. Catherine's Nursing School in Brooklyn and while in practice as a nurse, earned a bachelor's degree from Columbia University. She earned her M.D. from Downstate Medical School and completed her residency at Staten Island University Hospital. She was a Fellow in hematology and oncology at Brookdale Hospital, Brooklyn and St. Vincent's Hospital, Manhattan. She practiced her specialty for 17 years at Elmhurst Hospital Center and was an assistant attending physician in hematology and oncology at Elmhurst Hospital Center and an assistant clinical professor at the Mount Sinai College of Medicine, retiring a few months ago. Her son is the light of her life, she says.

With Henehan, William Schwartz, M.D. received the SHAREing & CAREing Physicians Recognition Award. He earned his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine and did his residency and a Fellowship in medicine and cardiology at Bronx Municipal Hospital Center and New York University. Schwartz was director of the only cardiac catheterization laboratory in Queens at Elmhurst Hospital Center and headed many studies that led to the widespread use of clotdissolving medications in heart attacks. He left academics for private practice in 1988, forming Broadway Cardiopulmonary P.C. with two other doctors, and became co-director of cardiology at then Astoria General Hospital. He has long fought to bring tertiary cardiac care (catheter-based intervention and open-heart surgery) to Queens. Until Northwest Queens has a center for tertiary cardiac care, he personally shepherds his patients through catheterizations and assists in inserting balloons and stents at hospitals in Manhattan. Schwartz is chief of cardiology at the Mount Sinai Hospital of Queens and an assistant clinical professor at the Mount Sinai College of Medicine. His Heart To Heart column in the Gazette provides medical advice and updates readers on Schwartz and his wife, son and daughter.

(L. to r.): William Schwartz, M.D., George Onorato, Arthur Gualtieri, M.D.
Andrew Latos of Latos Latos & Di Pippo, P.C. received the Community Recognition Award. He came to the United States from Greece to live in Astoria in 1968 at the age of five, attended St. Demetrios elementary and high schools and graduated from St. John's University with a degree in finance in 1985. He received his J.D. from Touro Law School in 1988 and opened his first law office in Astoria in 1989. Two years later, in 1991, when his brother, Peter, graduated from law school, he formed Latos & Latos. In 1998 the brothers merged their practice with Philip A. Di Pippo to become Latos Latos & Di Pippo, P.C.

(L. to r.): Anna Kril, Andrew Latos and Joseph Pistilli.
Andrew and Peter Latos were approached to become part of First Central Savings Bank, a new bank that would serve the community, in 1998. Today, Andrew Latos serves on the bank's board of directors. He is also an owner of The Rock Health & Fitness Club. His interest in physical fitness and sportsmanship extends to his further service to his community: he coaches basketball at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Flushing and football for DAC in Whitestone. He lives in Great Neck with his wife of 16 years and his son and daughter.

Besides conferring awards, SHAREing & CAREing made the evening a major fundraising effort. Prizes included an Olympus digital camera and MP3 Player, a gift certificate for dinner for two at Craftsteak and a scented candle, spa accessories and a gift certificate for She Goes to Your Head, tickets to a New York Jets Game and a Jets cooler bag filled with a bottle of bourbon and assorted tailgate goodies, a five-night stay in an Atlantic City penthouse and a bottle of champagne, a ceramic Christmas Village display and two stuffed bears, flat screen televisions, Mets box seat tickets and an American Express gift card. Starting bids of $100 were specified for three silent auction prizes of a one-year membership in Evolution workout facility, donated by Gus Prentzas, a 14-karat gold necklace and angel pendant donated by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and a six-month membership in The Rock Fitness Center, donated by Andrew Latos and The Rock Fitness Center. The verbal auction took bids for a fivecourse dinner with wine pairing to be prepared at the home of the person making the winning bid by Trattoria L'incontro Chef Rocco Sacramone. Sacramone will buy, prepare and serve all food and wine; a menu will be presented to the host for selection of the courses, and Sacramone will then select accompanying wines. Trattoria L'incontro has been cited by the New York Times, Newsday, Time Out Magazine and other print and broadcast media as one of the top three Italian restaurants in New York City and the top one in Queens. The Zagat 2007 Survey hails Sacramone for his hospitality and caring attention to all diners; the restaurant was also listed in the Michelin 2007 New York Dining Guide. "The dinner is a unique and wonderful prize. We're so grateful Rocco can give this kind of attention to us," SHAREing & CAREing Board President Anna Kril declared.
