Crossing Guards Wanted Queens police officials are searching for a few good crossing guards. Precinct supervisors said they have a shortage of school crossing guards in the Astoria, Long Island City, Woodside and Sunnyside areas, and are seeking qualified local residents to fill the posts. School crossing guards receive training by the New York City Police Department prior to their assignments, and are required to work in uniform, according to schedules determined by school principals and police at local precincts, officials said. Applicants must pass a thorough background check, must have a clean record and must pass alcohol and substance abuse tests. Prior experience is not a requirement, officials said. Police Department officials said applicants should possess appropriate social skills and must be able to work well with children and adults. "The ability to be patient is also helpful," the officials said. For more information, including starting salary, benefits, education requirements, uniform requirements and allowance, contact the Community Affairs Officer at your local police precinct, or call 1-646-610-5000 and ask for an application for a school crossing guard position.-Liz Goff |
