NYPA 'SHAREs & CAREs' For Astoria Health Group

The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has contributed $1,500 to SHAREing & CAREing, a community health advocacy organization based in Astoria that provides breast cancer support services to local women and their families.

The contribution, timed to coincide with SHAREing & CAREing's 12th anniversary benefit and fundraising silent auction on November 15, will be directed toward easing the financial burden that low-income breast cancer patients often face.

Located in Queens, one of the country's most ethnically diverse counties, the organization's staff and volunteers-who speak Polish, Russian, Greek, Spanish and Ukrainian-are committed to the women in their community. Among the services provided are transportation, pharmaceutical and hair prosthetics assistance, insurance advocacy and educational outreach to schools, churches and civic organizations.

"We greatly appreciate NYPA's generosity,"said Anna Kril, the organization's founder and a breast cancer survivor. "Last year, almost 7,700 women and their families received some form of assistance from SHAREing & CAREing and we are so grateful for NYPA's continuing support."

NYPA uses no tax money or state credit. It finances its operations through the sale of bonds and revenues earned in large part through sales of electricity. NYPA is a leader in promoting energy efficiency, new energy technologies and electric transportation initiatives. It is the nation's largest state-owned electric utility, with 18 generating facilities in various parts of the state and more than 1,400 circuit-miles of transmission lines.
