Young Will Be First Asian Woman In The Assembly

Ellen Young came to this country from Taiwan in 1977 at the age of 25 and since then has been an activist for many causes, a New York City cop, and a top aide to City Councilmember John Liu.

Eight days ago, on Election Day, she won the 22nd Assembly District seat to represent the Flushing district in the Assembly. She also became the first Asian woman to serve in the New York State Assembly.

Young said she's thrilled and honored to be serving in Albany. "As an activist over the past 30 years I tried to help a lot of people," she explained, "but now I'll be able to help a lot more people.

Among her goals as she looks forward to her Assembly career are:

+Education-to bring more funds to my district to promote smaller class sizes and at the same time more parental involvement.

+Affordable housing.

+Expanded healthcare programs, especially for seniors.

+Ways to ease the heavy traffic in the Downtown Flushing business district.

The 22nd AD job opened up last May when incumbent Assemblymember Jimmy Meng announced he was quitting because of his health.

Young immediately set her sights on the job and with her daughter Coral, 27, serving as her campaign manager, won a tough primary in September. In contrast, she scored an easy victory on November 7.

When Young arrived here from Taiwan, she moved into an apartment in Woodside. Later she moved to Elmhurst, and about six years ago, into Flushing.

She held a variety of jobs over that period of time, including a short stint as a cop from 1990 to 1994 in the 110th Police Precinct in Elmhurst. Adept at organizing, she formed Friends of Elmhurst Library, a parent and women's group, later the Chinese-American Voters Association and after that Asians for Equality with affordable housing as her cause.

She said she was with Liu "from day one" in early 2001 when he geared up to run for the City Council from Flushing. After he was elected as the first Asian in the council, Young became his chief office aide and, in effect, started preparing for her first campaign for public office.-John Toscano
