Rare GOP Primary In Forest Hills/Rego Park's 28th AD

A pair of Rego Park Republicans, Dolores Maddis and Walter E. Schmidt, are seeking their party's nomination in next Tuesday's primaries for the 28th Assembly District seat covering the Rego Park/Forest Hills area.

Maddis, a member of the Queens County Republican organization headed by state Senator Serphin Maltese, has been endorsed by the county GOP and is being supported by the group.

Schmidt reportedly is a member of an insurgent Republican faction in Queens that is headed by Bart Haggerty, who challenged Maltese for the leadership last February and lost.

Schmidt could not be reached by the Gazette for an interview about his campaign.

Maddis established the Regal Hill Republican Club and has built it up to 40 members. She has been active in the Forest Hills Community and Civic Association and last year was honored by state senate Republicans as a New York State Woman of Distinction.

The winner in the race between Maddis and Schmidt will run against Assemblymember Andrew Hevesi in November.
