Reckless Driving Arrest Turns Up Teen With Knife

On Wednesday, August 23, a 19-yearold Hispanic man was seen operating vehicle in a reckless manner at Ditmars and Shore Boulevards. Acheck showed the vehicle had surrendered status; also, the plates did not match the vehicle type. He was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, reckless driving and operating an unregistered vehicle. The officer making the arrest noticed a bulge in the left front pocket of a 16-year-old Hispanic male, a passenger in the vehicle. The officer frisked the younger suspect and found a large knife. The 16-year-old was charged with criminal possession of a weapon.

Monday, August 21:

 A 19-year-old Hispanic man was stopped at Northern Boulevard and 48th Street and a glass bottle of marijuana observed in plain view inside his car. During a search incidental to his arrest, three additional bottles were recovered. He was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

 A 29-year-old Hispanic man was seen urinating in public at 9-02 27 Ave. He produced a fraudulent Social Security card and resident card and was charged with forgery, possession of a forged instrument and urinating in public.

 A police officer observed a gravity knife in the center console of a car which had been stopped at 31st Avenue and 29th Street. A search after the arrest of the 31year-old white male driver revealed two bags of marijuana. The perpetrator was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of marijuana.

 A 36-year-old Hispanic man involved in an accident at 38th Avenue and 31st Street was observed by a police officer to have slurred speech and the smell of an alcoholic beverage on his breath. He refused to take a chemical test and was charged with refusal to take a breath test.

Tuesday, August 22:

 A 14-year-old black male used keys to enter a vehicle at 26-32 2nd St. and attempted to remove it without permission or authority. He was charged with grand larceny auto and criminal possession of stolen property.

 A 16-year-old white male was observed writing "CLASS-WAR" on a Verizon pay phone at Astoria Boulevard and 35th Street without permission or authority. He was charged with making graffiti, criminal mischief and possession of a graffiti instrument.  A 30-year-old white man was

observed pushing a cart at 20th Avenue and 38th Street, obstructing vehicular traffic. He could not produce identification. A search incidental to his arrest produced a glass stem containing cocaine residue. He was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and disorderly conduct.

Wednesday, August 23:

 A 19-year-old white man was seen driving without headlights at 34th Avenue and 34th Street. The officer who pulled him over smelled alcohol on his breath and saw he had bloodshot eyes. The suspect had a blood alcohol level of 0.231. He was charged with DWI.

 According to the manager of a store at 36-20 Steinway St., a 23-year-old white man placed items in his front pocket and in

the waistband of his pants and walked past all points of payment to exit the store, with the items but without permission or authority. The manager reported the incident to a police officer who arrested and searched the suspect. The search revealed a silver gravity knife. The suspect was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, possession of burglar tools and petit larceny.

Reports from Fire Department sources indicated that a roach bomb exterminating device lived up to its name early Monday morning, August 28. The "bomb" blew out windows and buckled a wall between two apartments on the second floor of a fourstory building at 31-11 Crescent St., Astoria. No injuries were reported.
