Manhole Fire Damages Van
Consolidated Edison workers investigate what witnesses on the scene said was a transformer fire in a manhole on 44th Street between 30th and 31st Avenues that occurred at about 4:30 p.m. on July 18. A van caught fire when the manhole exploded and was substantially damaged. Witnesses did not concur with Fire Department reports that the incident consisted of "electrical wires burning on poles".
