Panchiaki Korais Awards Scholarships

"We would like to give scholarships to the youth of our island of Chios," said Constantine Parthenis, president of the Society, located at 43-15 202nd St., Bayside. This unique society granted $30,000 to the William Spyropoulos School Building Expansion Fund of St.

Nicholas Church in Flushing. The Chian Dance Group under the direction of Mrs. Klidas promotes Hellenism in the community. The Society's generosity to public and private schools is legendary.

Maria Skoulas and Irene Pappas of St. John's University were awarded scholarships for excellence in the Modern Greek Language and Literature Program on June 1 at the Center's hall. Both students are of Chian descent. "We are honored to be here tonight," said Skoulas, spokesperson. "We both go to Chios annually to enjoy the beaches and our families in our villages. Respect for Greece and our island of Chios are deep in our hearts." Pappas is descended from a prominent family from the town of Pirgi. The area has a rich history due to its production of Masticha (resin gum).
