'Apprentice' Gussies Up VB&G Children's Room

1 Queens Borough President Helen Marshall
On Monday, April 10, The Variety Boys and Girls Club (VB&G) of Astoria and the South Queens Boys and Girls Club in Richmond Hill were the focus of the NBC/Donald Trump hit show "The Apprentice". The clubs were the setting for two competing teams of the show as they were challenged to make improvements in one of the children's rooms in both of the boys and girls clubs.

The show, co-produced by Trump and Mark Burnett, had Apprentice teams set about finding ways to improve the children's space using paint, hardware, carpentry and any other means in which to decorate the existing rooms. Both teams developed childrenfriendly themes so that youngsters could become more involved with what the club had to offer them during their visits. The Richmond Hill club was the setting for a music room while the Astoria club was an open architecture, interactive, multi-purpose room with a large screen television, a girls' reading area, and a music, karaoke and rest area. Trump's judges chose Astoria's Variety Boys and Girls Club as the winner of the competition, while the Richmond Hill team leader was, true to the show's mission, fired.

While celebrating the annual Community Dinner at Ammos Estiatorio Restaurant at 20-30 Steinway St. the guests gathered round a television set to watch the episode of "The Apprentice" to see the VB&G Club win the competition. Much ado was made out of the event by all.

Still in a celebratory mood, the club honored Board Members Ann Buehler, Samuel Goldstein and Salah M. Hassanein for 50 years of service and Alfred Buglisi, James Reid and Julian Wager for 25 years.

Club President Thomas Nowierski was appreciative of the attention "The Apprentice" brought to the club and the improvements they left for the benefit of the area's children while Event Chair and Emcee Gus Antonopoulos thanked the nearly 200 guests who attended the annual dinner and pledged his continued support of the club's activities, highlighting the difference the club makes in children's lives.
