MLHS Offers Smart Saturdays

Martin Luther H.S. (MLHS) is hosting Smart Saturdays this spring. Smart Saturdays, an enrichment program for elementary school students, is intended to expand children's horizons and allow exploration of new frontiers through fun, hands-on, exciting learning sessions and day trips throughout New York City. The curriculum is designed by principals and staff members from Lutheran elementary schools in Queens.

The program of academic and enrichment classes for students in grades four to eight gives hands-on education experiences to prepare them for their future academic career.

"This program will foster social interaction among students of similar schools," Barbara Chin-Sinn, principal of St. John Lutheran School in Glendale said. "It will also help to offset the culture shock of students going from a small elementary school into large high schools."

Smart Saturdays is designed to complement the five-day academic program now in place. Students will attend three classes each Saturday morning and follow a schedule of science, math and an exploration session. Science and math will include enrichment material and is supportive of the work at each grade level in order to increase the student's proficiency in each subject area.

Also incorporated into the program will be day trips around the Metro New York City area. Past trips have been to West Point, the Statue of Liberty, the Museum of Natural History and local sporting events.
