Since 10th grade, Raoul Heugas Jr. has wanted to
attend the United States
Military Academy at West Point, New York. He was recently informed that his dream has come true: shortly after he graduates from William Cullen Bryant H.S., he will leave his home in the Dutch Kills section of Long Island City for the Academy's Reception Day on June 26.
"It has been a dream of mine for some time to become an engineer," Heugas explained. "First and foremost, West Point is not only one of the oldest, but also one of the best engineering institutions in the United States. Second, West Point will provide me with the ability to perform my civic duties in the most efficient and practical way possible, Third, believe that West Point will provide me with a well-rounded education. While most colleges are strictly academic, West Point focuses on all parts of the human condition. By receiving a more well-rounded education, I believe that I could become a better functioning part of society, and be better able to excel in all of my endeavors."
At Bryant, Heugas was captain of the football team, where he broke the school's record for the most rushing yards. He played on the varsity baseball team for three years and during his senior year became part of the wrestling team as well. He is involved with peer tutoring and the Bryant yearbook. He is a member of the National Honor society and is on the school's honor roll.
His extracurricular activities include serving as both an athlete and an umpire for teams composed of younger children in the Immaculate Conception Youth Program (I.C.Y.P.) He founded an organization to collect used clothing from people in the neighborhood, which he donates to the Bowery Mission in Lower Manhattan.
Heugas expressed thanks to his parents, Nina and Raul Heugas Sr., and to local civic leaders and volunteers George and Connie Stamatiades for their support.
On graduation from West Point, Heugas will be commissioned an officer in the United States Army.
